Subject: Complaint against your report titled “Ethiopia accused of war crimes in Mai Kadera massacre”

Hello:

I just read your report titled “Ethiopia accused of war crimes in Mai Kadera massacre,” which compelled me to write you this email. Unfortunately, your report makes several claims that are unsubstantiated. What stood out to me was how the report states that several witnesses have accused the Amhara fanos and the Ethiopian National Defense Force of being the culprit of the Mai Kadera massacre. Your statement is inconsistent with reports made by Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International. There are numerous interviews by residents, victims, and survivors that corroborated the accusations against TPLF.

According to reports made by Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International, an armed extremist youth group known as Samri, led by TPLF, entered Mai Kadera with the intent to attack Amhara civilians. The group mutilated and massacred hundreds of women, children, and elders with knives and machetes indiscriminately.

As documented by Human Rights Watch, The United Nations, Amnesty International, and numerous other media outlets, TPLF has committed crimes against humanity for 27 years under its dictatorship. Currently, TPLF is a registered terrorist organization under the Global Terrorism Database. Henceforth, there is no doubt of TPLF’s capacity and lack of morality to commit such a heinous crime.

The report released by your organization was extremely biased and an utter disregard for the victims of this act of terrorism. It did not provide any evidence for its claim, and intentionally excluded witness accounts that accused TPLF of the massacre. As a news organization that strives to adhere to journalism ethics, I urge you to reconsider publishing a report that is unsubstantiated, distorted, and reprehensible. Most of all, your report stands in defense of a terrorist organization.

Currently, Ethiopia is dealing with an increased amount of ethnic-based violence. Propaganda and faulty media reports play a major role in increasing ethnic unrest by amplifying hatred and encouraging violence. A good example of that is Rwanda’s Radio Television Libre Des Mille Collines, which played a significant role in the genocide of Tutsis. As we speak, massacres, rapes, and burnings are going on in Ethiopia against ethnic Amharas, which your article falsely accused.

I fear that your report might be playing a major role in increasing and justifying those massacres.

Thus, I am sending this email to inform you that your fallacious report contributes to the atrocity happening in Ethiopia. Inflaming and supporting genocide is not appropriate for a respected press like yours. You are morally responsible and legally obligated to report with accuracy during crises where human life is at stake. Therefore, I ask that you either support your article with concrete evidence or retract the article and issue an apology.

Sincerely,
